That’s when they stumbled upon paintball guns!
Paintball guns were initially created for a different purpose. Farmers used them to mark trees and cattle from a distance – useful and great fun! Charles and Hayes saw the potential for these nifty markers in their game, and they decided to give them a go!
The First Paintball Game
In June 1981, the first-ever paintball game took place in New Hampshire, USA. Charles and Hayes invited ten mates to join them in their wild adventure. They split into two teams and played “Capture the Flag” in the great outdoors. The players had a blast, and paintball history was made! An interesting fact about this first game was that the game was won without a paintball even being shot. So even though they were carrying paintball guns, does this make it the first ever paintball game. You decide!
News about this exciting new sport spread like wildfire, and soon, people all over the world wanted to give paintball a try. It didn’t take long for paintball to become a smashing hit!

With the growing popularity of paintball, enthusiasts started building dedicated paintball fields to play on. The first commercial paintball field opened in 1982 in New York, and more followed suit across the USA and beyond. This was a major step in paintball origins and development.

In the 1980s, the first paintball masks were introduced to keep players safe during their colourful battles. Soon after, other essential gear like chest protectors and gloves joined the paintball scene.

Slightly misleading
The term professional is a bit misleading though. Usually professional means that a person is paid for something, ie. It’s their profession. In paintball it’s a bit different. Paintball Pro’s are players that either look the part or compete in competitions. No paintballer is paid, other than those who work for paintball manufacturers and the odd one who is paid to appear on posters and adverts etc. But no one is actually paid to play paintball anywhere in the world. There were rumours at one time that a team from Russia, the Russian Legion, were paid players, but this was never confirmed. If there were professional players, this would be a major step in paintball origins and development.
This goes the same for “Sponsorship”, there is no team in the world that is “Sponsored” in the traditional way. This is because paintball isn’t televised. Sponsorship in paintball means that players get a discount from their favourite shop. Nothing more. So sponsorship in paintball is really a marketing ploy by shops to fool players into thinking they are getting something. Usually a 10% discount. But go to any shop and buy your kit and ask for a 10% discount and you’ll get it. So in a way it’s just a scam for gullible people.
The Rise of Paintball in the UK
Paintball arrived in the UK in the late-1980s, and it quickly gained a loyal following. The United Kingdom Paintball Sports Federation (UKPSF) was formed in the mid 90’s to help promote the sport and ensure that players had a safe and enjoyable experience on the field. Over the years, the UK has seen a boom in paintball venues, with over 300 fields operating across the country in the mid 90’s and turn of the century. (Turn of the century, that sounds weird doesn’t it)
